What you will be doing
AppSignal is looking for a Senior Technical Writer who enjoys digging into complex problems, understands how developers think, and is comfortable with writing clear, compelling technical documentation, guides, and examples. We're looking to renovate our documentation experience to meet new expectations, with projects like restructuring our docs to leverage ML/AI for a natural language experience and making our API documentation concise and useful.
Key responsibilities & qualifications
- Hands-on Product Engagement - Develop deep, hands-on familiarity with the product to validate technical accuracy, ensure documentation reflects real user workflows, and build strong empathy for the customer experience.
- Customer Empathy & Feedback Responsiveness - Demonstrate a strong customer-first mindset by actively incorporating user feedback, support insights, and stakeholder input to continuously improve documentation clarity, usability, and relevance.
- Cross-Functional Technical Review Leadership - Lead and coordinate technical reviews across multiple content streams, collaborating with diverse stakeholders (engineering, product, support, and design) to ensure alignment, accuracy, and consistency.
- Documentation Quality & Experience Design - Apply proven methods to assess documentation quality, identify opportunities for improvement, and design changes that enhance the overall content experience. Show sound judgment and initiative in implementing meaningful improvements.
- Ownership & Continuous Improvement - Exhibit the confidence and professional courage to recommend and execute changes that elevate documentation standards, even in complex or ambiguous environments.
- Code Examples & Technical Depth - Ability to create, review, and refine code examples that support developer audiences and improve content usability is highly valued.
- AI-Assisted Writing Experience (Preferred) - Experience using AI tools to support technical writing workflows—such as drafting, editing, research, or content optimization—is preferred.
What you bring
- 5+ years of technical experience, with proficiency in at least one programming language
- Proven work experience as a technical writer, editor, or content creator (with writing samples to review)
- Demonstrable ability to quickly diagnose whether a piece is accurate, well articulated, and developer-friendly. Fluent English is required
- A drive to be curious and learn about new technologies, and apply AI for consumer-facing documentation
- Strong time-management skills to run reviews across multiple content streams
- Experience working autonomously, but with the help and collaboration of engineering as subject matter experts
- Comfort working with a highly distributed team and collaborating with many counterparts across time zones
- Experience working in a high-growth startup or software company (preferred)
- Familiarity with using tools such as GitHub and Vercel is appreciated
- Experience in rearchitecting and migrating documentation systems is a plus!
